September Edition
Sunny September
The school year is off to a great start as students and teachers work together to build relationships, develop social contracts, and get settled into a fun routine of creating and growing.
This is the best time of year to establish a positive “at-home” routine for a successful school year. Consider where your child will do their homework, how you can limit distractions while they work, how you will help them organize their papers, and when your family will enjoy reading time.
When your child comes home from school and you ask them what they learned today, how many kids say, “I didn’t learn anything.” Instead, some parents find it helpful to ask in a different way such as, “What was one good thing that happened today?”
We have been engaged in our Beginning of the Year Assessments. The information gathered will provide us with invaluable information as we support students in their learning. Teachers will reach out to parents to schedule fall conferences in the next month or so in order to review each child’s data and discuss how we will work together to maximize their learning experience this school year. Even in the midst of the assessment period, we still have time to engage in fun learning activities.
A Look Back
The first week of school was full of excitement, cheers, high-fives, and art projects.
Thank you, Rush Creek Church volunteers for helping teachers set up their classrooms. Each year, Rush Creek Church hosts “Rush Week” where they come to various schools to help teachers get ready for the year. Volunteers did a variety of projects such as creating bulletin boards, sharpening pencils, and setting up folders. Teachers were so grateful for the helping hands.
PTA hosted their annual “Chalk the Walk.” Families came to Corey and decorated the sidewalk with kind words, affirmations, and drawings. Students loved seeing such positivity and beautiful drawings as they approached the main doors on the first day of school.
PTA is also working to sponsor each staff member’s PTA membership. Teachers were blown away when they found out that families and local businesses were sponsoring them. THANK YOU!
The Dad’s Club hosted their annual “Clap In” by cheering on students as they entered the building on the first time of the year! Getting fist bumps, high fives and hugs as they walked into school really got children excited about their first day of school.
Our school mascot, Osito, even joined the fun to welcome everyone back to school.
Thank you to the parents who donated water to our dismissal team. We are beyond grateful!!
Parent Information Night
Grade level teams hosted two Zoom sessions to share information about the school year. Parents found it helpful to learn about the schedule, expectations, and grade level procedures.
Thank you to the parents who completed the survey. Your input will help us improve our service to you. Most parents found it helpful to have the sessions on Zoom and that teachers sent out the video presentation for future reference. If you have questions about this or didn’t see it, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
There were a few questions after Parent Information Night that we’d like to answer:
Q&A:
Question: How do I see my child’s grades?
Answer: Log into Parent Self-Serve by following the link below. We will create a how-to video to give you a step-by-step guide.
Question: Is there a school dress code?
Answer: Yes. In addition to the dress code outlined in the AISD Student Code of Conduct starting on page 57 (linked below), your child should wear tennis shoes on days that they have PE and Dance class.

If you have other questions about the school year or the information presented, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teachers. Hopefully you are connected on Class Dojo to message them. You can also email them directly. Here is our staff directory which includes email addresses of our staff:
School Safety
Please remember to NOT be on your cell phone before or after school in a school zone.
As we continue to prioritize school safety, we’d like to share front office procedures when you pick up your child.
When you ring the doorbell, the front office staff will greet you. Please state the purpose of your visit and your child’s name.
If you are picking up your child, please have your ID ready. Even if we know you well, we will still ask for your ID. After you show your ID and complete a sign out form, we will call for your child to come to the office.
Thank you, Mrs. Puente, our school clerk for being so welcoming!
Spirit Days
Celebrate with us through Spirit Wear Days:
Mondays: College Day. As a school community, we can help expose our students to various colleges and universities. It's never too early to sport your favorite college gear.
Wednesdays: Gunn and Arlington Day. After our 'cubs' leave Corey, they will be Gunn 'Gators' (6th-8th grades), and then Arlington 'Colts' (9th-12th grades). Let's celebrate our feeder pattern by wearing spirit wear for Gunn Jr. High Academy and Arlington High School.
Fridays: We are proud to be Corey Cubs!! Show your school spirit by wearing any Corey shirt.

Thank you for supporting our PTA in our efforts to Partner with the Parent Resource Network (PRN), to host a workshop about special education laws, parental rights, and 504 plans, and to launch a Parent Resources Webpage at: coreypta.org/parentresources. Additionally, we hosted a Q&A session for new-to-Corey parents, Kindergarten playdates, and a "5th Grade to Gunn Junior High" Information Session.
We demonstrated what can be achieved when schools and families work together to accomplish a common goal, and now our PTA is a national example of how strong, effective family-school partnerships enrich the educational experience and overall well-being for all students.
A special thank you to Kara Roberson and the Corey PTA for collaborating with Corey staff to ensure all families feel supported!

Notes from the Nurse
Hello Corey Cubs and Families! I hope your school year is going well so far. I wanted to send out a few reminders regarding clinic policies and procedures.
-COVID update-There is no longer any specific reporting or isolation protocol for COVID-19. Students who test positive may return to school when fever free x24 hours (without fever reducing medications) and symptoms improving.
-Exclusion criteria-Please keep your student home from school if they are running a fever (100.0 or higher) or having vomiting and/or diarrhea. Please call the front office if your child is going to be out sick, so that they can be marked accordingly. After 3 consecutive absences, a doctor's note is needed to excuse the absences.
-Medication Policy-Just a reminder that ALL medications given at school must have a doctor's signature and order. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications, such as Tylenol and Benadryl. Students are not allowed to carry medications in their backpack, lunch box, etc. This is for their safety as well as those around them. AISD has a medication form that can be filled out by your doctor. Go to aisd.net-Departments-Health Services. From there, you can print off the authorization form. Prescription medications must be in an original pharmacy-labeled container with your student's name on it. Please reach out if you need any assistance with this.
Thank you all for your continued support and cooperation. I look forward to a great year!
